The Nature Conservancy has been assisting the USDA Forest Service to develop inventory and monitoring protocols for GDEs on National Forests.
The Level I protocol is used to characterize qualitatively GDEs within an administrative unit. GDE location and extent are spatially referenced. This serves as the basis for determining when GDEs may be affected by proposed actions or activities. The Level II protocol serves as the foundation for identification of design measures and assessment of project and activity effects. It includes methods for describing major attributes such as: hydrogeologic setting, aquatic habitat, aquatic and riparian vegetation communities, and disturbances affecting GDEs. This protocol can be used to determine ecological significance of the GDE and associated resources.
