This web application is designed for anyone interested in exploring the patterns of tree canopy cover and urban heat in relationship to communities across the Portland-Vancouver Metropolitan region. A high-level summary of city and county tree-related policies and programs is also provided, given that authority and resources for urban tree management reside within local government.

Information gathered from this application can be used in various ways, including:
  • An educational tool to gain better understanding about tree canopy cover, urban heat, and community characteristics across the region.
  • A conversation starter with neighbors, community partners, and local agency staff.
  • To coordinate financial and resource investments to address inequities.
  • As an initial, high-level planning tool to direct tree planting, tree maintenance, and tree preservation activities.

Connecting Canopies is a collaboration led by the Blueprint Foundation, The Intertwine Alliance, and The Nature Conservancy to improve the equitable distribution of trees and to accelerate progress in urban forestry across the greater Portland-Vancouver metropolitan region. The collaboration was formed in response to the regional decline in urban tree canopy and recognition that not all communities have good access to trees and their many benefits. Connecting Canopies is working to bring together neighborhoods, government, partners and businesses to create inclusive and sustainable action plans for urban tree planting and stewardship.
