Introduction

Blue Carbon Plus is a global initiative launched in 2024 by Conservation International and The Nature Conservancy to scale market based solutions beyond carbon credits. The program supports blue carbon positive businesses that restore and protect coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrasses, and tidal marshes while improving livelihoods for coastal communities. By combining scientific expertise, financial investment, and entrepreneurship, BC+ helps businesses overcome barriers to market access, attract funding, and grow sustainably. These coastal ecosystems play a critical role in climate mitigation, storing carbon at significantly higher rates than terrestrial forests while also supporting biodiversity, food security, and economic opportunity. Through partnerships with governments, investors, and local communities, BC+ aims to conserve up to 16.9 million hectares and support more than 100 million people by 2050 while driving global demand for sustainable blue carbon solutions.
