Overview
This resource provides guidance for assessing and analyzing legal, institutional and financial mechanisms that can support Durable Freshwater Protection. These assessments help identify existing protection mechanisms, responsible authorities, financial resources, barriers and opportunities for addressing current and future threats to freshwater ecosystems. The guidance explains how assessments can examine protected areas and OECMs, water use and management, fisheries, forestry, mining, energy and food production, water and land rights, and other relevant policies and regulations. Assessments can be tailored to national, subnational or project contexts and should consider threats to key ecological attributes, institutional responsibilities and opportunities for implementation. The resource also provides examples of terms of reference and assessments from Ecuador, the Balkans and Angola to help programs structure and scope their own DFP assessments.
