Latest On The Conservation Gateway

A well-managed and operational Conservation Gateway is in our future! Marketing, Conservation, and Science have partnered on a plan to rebuild the Gateway into the organization’s enterprise content management system (AEM), with a planned launch of a minimal viable product in late 2024. If you’re interested in learning more about the project, reach out to megan.sheehan@tnc.org for more info!

Welcome to Conservation Gateway

The Gateway is for the conservation practitioner, scientist and decision-maker. Here we share the best and most up-to-date information we use to inform our work at The Nature Conservancy.

LANDFIRE on the Ground: Thumbnail Stories

1/4/2011

Though named LANDFIRE, the suite of tools, models and digital map layers is the first complete, nationally consistent collection of resources with an ecological foundation that can be used across several disciplines. LANDFIRE products reach beyond fire into other application areas related to the nation’s natural resources. More than 20 digital map layers were created, and in addition to those spatial products, more than 1,000 dynamic vegetation models were created.

This brochure provides an overview of six LANDFIRE applications that illustrate the power of these products. Included are a look at ecological departure analysis for the lower 48 states; analysis of the human and fiscal impacts of wildfire as illustrated in USDA Forest Service and the Northern Risk Assessment analyses; a carbon “rapid assessment" used by the US Geological Survey; the Northern Sierra Nevada climate change project; data being used for mid-scale planning at the Hiawatha National Forest in the northeast US; and the partnership between The Nature Conservancy, the University of California-Berkeley, and the Spatial Informatics group as they work on smoke emission predictions as they relate to carbon and air quality.
