The article examines subsistence fishery in Kenya under hypothetical scenarios of declines in catch and how socioeconomic conditions influenced fishers’ decisions to exit declining fishery. It emphasizes the importance of understanding socioeconomic context in successful fishery management. This finding supports the proposition that wealth generation and employment opportunities directed at the poorest fishers may help reduce fishing effort on overexploited fisheries.
