Abstract
Partnering with the Northeast State Fish and Wildlife Agencies and the North Atlantic LCC, The Nature Conservancy created a guide to the terrestrial and freshwater habitats of the northeastern United States, based on the Terrestrial Habitat Map project and the Northeast Aquatic Classification Project. Using available biological and environmental data, ecologists have identified and mapped habitat types at regionally useful scales, with attributes of condition information attached to each type.
The Nature Conservancy organized the different habitat types by summary group and separated them by NatureServe’s macrogroups. TNC then provided key statistics about the status and distribution of each habitat, a description of the habitat, what species live there, where one could go to see it and some indication of its condition. Each habitat gets a two-page fact sheet with a description, photo, map, associated species, related state habitat names and condition information. Users can download the guide, maps and data to explore the distribution of the habitats at a finer scale.
