Abstract

Uncharacteristic wildfires, driven by fire suppression and prolonged drought, have raised concerns about forest health in the western U.S., prompting Region 3 of the U.S. Forest Service to revise land management plans for all National Forests in Arizona and New Mexico. In partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the Southwest Forest Assessment Project (SWFAP) is producing peer-reviewed data and models to support transparent, science-based planning. These tools help land managers assess ecological conditions, communicate tradeoffs, and engage the public in shaping the future of forests, grasslands, deserts, and streams. The initiative aims to meet new standards for ecosystem diversity and sustainability while addressing the growing threats to land health.
