A local classification of historical/natural vegetation exists for portions of the greater Southern Blue Ridge (SBR) landscape, but not all. Since this classification is similar in concept to LANDFIRE Biophysical Settings, BpS could be used to “fill in the gaps” where the local data is not yet available. Using sets of existing reference plots and additional recently visited field sites, the author evaluates the accuracy of LANDFIRE BpS maps over a wide range of locations across the greater SBR and compares them to the local classification called Ecological Zones.
