Conservation Lands

Healthy forests and grasslands sustain our economies, supply our water and clean our air. But because nature’s value rarely figures in economic decisions, we continue to sacrifice these natural systems as we expand our production of food, energy and other needed resources.

The loss of wildlife and habitat continues at an alarming rate, and protected areas alone will not be enough to stem the tide.  The solution is to integrate protected areas with sustainably managed working lands—protecting vast landscapes for future generations.

Here you will find information on some of our key strategies that focus on conserving entire ecosystems with a mix of protected areas—like national parks—with indigenous territories, private lands, and well-managed working lands (from agriculture to mining) that consider people an integral part of nature’s continuum.

Development by Design:  providing government agencies and corporations with science-based planning tools that lighten the environ­mental footprint of oil and gas extraction, solar and wind farms, mining, and infrastructure like new roads and highways

Conservation Finance: demonstrating fresh ways to provide adequate, sustainable financing through innovative mechanisms such as debt-for-nature swaps, Water Funds and conservation trust funds.

Indigenous and Communal Lands: partnering with indigenous  and traditional peoples to provide them with training and tools to manage their lands and to create new policies and land-use models that support both the cultural diversity of local communities as well as our conservation targets.

Sustainable Agricuture: Where and when the demand for both the conversion to and intensification of agricultural lands occurs is a crucial conservation question that the Conservancy.
