This paper offers a model for assessing the linkages between biodiversity and human livelihoods. The framework was designed in a way that allows the strength of integration to be measured according to five different categories. These include species dependence, habitat dependence, spatial dependence, temporal dependence and conservation association. The framework applies specifically to the assessment of linked incentive conservation initiatives and the stronger the linkage, the greater the chances of successful conservation. What cannot be evaluated with this model are the biophysical, social and institutional contexts of a conservation project. These conditions often have an important impact on the success of a conservation plan. The methodology could serve as a model for similar initiatives.
The Nature Conservancy is the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people.
