Biodiversity Conservation and the Quality of Life of Indigenous People in the Bolivian Chaco

Drawn from a 15-year partnership between the Capitanía de Alto y Bajo Isoso (CABI), a 9000 person indigenous organization of Guaraní-speaking people in southeastern Bolivia and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) an international conservation organization, this article shares lessons learned, recommendations and crucial elements in building and maintaining partnerships between conservation organizations and indigenous communities. The CABI-WCS partnership offers lessons on understanding differences, clarifying interests, implementing joint activities, overcoming disagreements, developing a shared vision and coming to terms with what is shared, and what is not.
