FireScape Monterey promotes protection of both life and property
affected by wildfire and healthy resilient ecosystems through collaborative
stewardship. Partners have identified five core values that they are
aiming to secure in their landscape:
•
Fire adapted human
communities
•
Healthy watersheds
•
Native biodiversity
•
Cultural resources
•
Aesthetic, natural and
wilderness qualities of the northern Santa Lucia Mountains
Current work here
includes a Forest Service Strategic Community Fuelbreak Improvement Project on
the northern portion of the Monterey Ranger District of the Los Padres National
Forest; this project is based on a concept derived from this FLN’s from the
Open Standards for Conservation Planning process. The Fire Safe Council for
Monterey has also been working with local fire districts to increase local fire
suppression capacity to meet community protection needs. Researchers have also
been studying sudden oak death here, and in related work, some partners are
removing symptomatic bay trees near healthy oak trees along a shared roadway;
this will both mitigate the effects of the disease and reduce fuels and widen the road for better firefighting vehicle and improved fire safety.
