Conservation by Design The Nature Conservancy CbD Conservation Planning

A Strategic Framework for Mission Success

For two decades, The Nature Conservancy’s work has been guided by a framework we call Conservation by Design. From the beginning, Conservation by Design has unified our efforts around the world by providing a common language and consistent approach across the diversity of systems, cultures, geographies and communities in which we engage. It has guided us in identifying what to conserve and where and how to conserve it, and in measuring our effectiveness.

Conservation by Design articulates our conservation vision and marries our collaborative, science-based approach with key analytical methods. Around the world, this strategic framework guides the Conservancy and our partners in conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends.

Meeting the Challenges of the 21st Century

We envision a world where the diversity of life thrives, and people act to conserve nature for its own sake and its ability to fulfill our needs and enrich our lives. But as society struggles to provide enough energy, food, water and other resources to sustain a growing population, solutions are often found at nature’s expense. In this century, we will see hard-earned conservation gains erode unless we stabilize the climate and find better ways to meet these increasing resource needs.

Today, a new edition of Conservation by Design honors and builds on our successful history and evolves our approach and methodology to meet the challenges of our time.

Conservation by Design will continue to guide where we work and how we take action. We invite you to explore the documents below to learn about this approach that can be used by conservationists everywhere, at every scale.

Conservation by Design 2.0 Website

The primary text of this website was created from the Conservation by Design 2.0 Guidance Document. It is useful to think of the Guidance Document as a textbook - providing step-by-step instructions on what a full CbD 2.0 strategic process entails. The website supplements the Guidance by providing practitioners with implementation tips, examples, tools, and best practices, which are found in close proximity to the sections of the Guidance that they support. We will continue to update the website with additional examples and resources as we identify them, and towards that end we encourage you to submit your examples, case studies, and other tools that you find useful using the comment boxes at the bottom of most pages.

It provides instructions for completing all five phases of CbD 2.0 and outlines current best practices in conservation and TNC’s evolved planning methodology, including how to select conservation strategies and places to work, while effectively measuring our impact. The guidance document replaces the current Conservation Business Planning guidance.
